Kicking off a new year!

A new decade, the 50th anniversary of USMS! Lots going on:

  • Team meeting this Sunday 1/12/2020 after practice. Please meet us at Market District in the cafeteria-- if anyone knows someone in corporate and can get that room reserved for us-- LMK. They won't let me reserve it as I am not corporate-- we can push tables together. Better food for hungry swimmers. Please bring ideas, events you would like to participate in, skills that you would like to lend us?? Etc.

  • Social Friday March 6, 6:30-7:30 Yoga for Swimmers, Homegrown Yoga in Oakmont with Katie Lascola (8$). There is a limit of 15 so please RSVP to Katie directly @ lascola.katie@gmail.com. Thank you Katie for offering! As someone who fell down all of her steps getting ready to swim last Saturday-- core strength, flexibility and balance are lifesaving skills.

  • Lane etiquette reminders:  Cory emailed our regulars last week, See the link demonstrating passing etiquette. How to circle swim/lane etiquette

  • Gear here!! We have gear-- new caps, stickers and car magnets. Please consider buying a few--- Cory and I will try to keep them around for the next few weeks and had them out. Caps are 5$, Stickers one for 3 or 2 /5$ and car magnets are 5$ also. Cash at practice or zelle are both fine! The swimathon shirts are cool! I am going to attach the images below, awaiting the development of the screens for printing. We might get more for a price, we might get grey hoodies. Feedback and thoughts welcome.

  • There will be a USMS/AMS meeting on Friday 1/31/2020-- hopefully at the FCHS. We have some things as a region to vote on. Details to come, but I would like to have as many swimmers and coaches as possible and we can go out after- we will be welcoming swimmers and coaches from all over the AMS (allegheny mountain swim) area if we host. Mel Goldstein will be coming in from USMS to run; unfortunately we will not likely have a clinic (late for all three!) Please save the date if you are able.

  •  Winter weather policy: Please look to social media (insta, FB, twitter), email and our website regarding any weather cancellations. SSA and FCHS do not automatically follow once another. Any 2 hour delay @ SSA cancels AM FFH automatically. If SSA cancels due to weather-- FFH is a maybe. The general rule of thumb has been that if it is one of those cold weather delays (the ones where they cancel the night before because of the risk of  "spontaneous freezing to death") we sometimes are able to still swim. SSA does not want our cars or people there if they are trying to plow or salt the campus in the am, but if the issue is simply cold weather then they have let us swim in the past. These cancellations usually are called the previous night and therefore we have time to let you know. Most often if the call is made in the am-- SSA will be closed to FFH. FCHS's AD usually let's Dan know if we are allowed in. And we then get the word out and update our website.

  • Swim meet at MLAC 2/29 & 3/1!! We definitely want to attend this one. The link is here https://www.flyingfishheads.org/event/1185/ and we will work on turns, starts etc going into this meet! Copies of the sign up forms will be in both the binders at FCHS and SSA.

  •  April is USMS Adult Learn to Swim Month. We are going to try to host a certification somewhere in Pittsburgh before April and then offer the classes. Anyone who might want to get certified please LMK. This isn't a learn to swim training, this is a survival skill in the water program. Most adult drownings occur involving adults who did not grow up near the water but are trying to help their children or on boats etc-- any of our team can become certified-- please consider it. The certification will be covered by proceeds from our swimathon. Once we get ourselves able to do this, I would like to take it to other areas in the city. (not simply in April). Would love any enthusiasm that you have.  (Always!)

  • Have an event that you think FFH would like? Another Word Play? Symphony? Indoor triathlon? Please share with us!
